The Seed of Abraham

Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, while Lot dwelt among the cities of the [Jordan] valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord. The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your descendants for ever. I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your descendants also can be counted. Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.” So Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron; and there he built an altar to the Lord.
    Genesis 13:12-18

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what wilt thou give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, thou hast given me no offspring; and a slave born in my house will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; your own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.
    Genesis 15:1-5

When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly. Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. And I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. ... And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her; I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.

The Magnificat – Магнификат – Canticle of Mary – Ode of the Theotokos– Ἡ ᾨδὴ τῆς Θεοτόκου

  And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden.
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
For He who is mighty has done great things for me,
And Holy is His name.
And His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm,
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
And exalted those of low degree;
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel,
In remembrance of His mercy,
As He spoke to our fathers,
To Abraham and to his posterity for ever.”

Κατα Λουκαν 1:46-55

Luke 1:46-55 (Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition [emphasis added])

Nota Bene, the King James Version has Luke 1:55 as:

“As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.”

Likewise the Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition has Luke 1:55 as:

“As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.”

But for such purposes, significant is only the Greek:

  σπέρματι

τῷ δὲ Ἀβραὰμ ἐρρέθησαν αἱ ἐπαγγελίαι καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ. οὐ λέγει, καὶ τοῖς σπέρμασιν, ὡς ἐπὶ πολλῶν, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐφ' ἑνός, καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου, ὅς ἐστιν Χριστός.   Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many; but, referring to one, “And to your offspring,” which is Christ.
Galatians 3:16 (Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition [emphasis added])

Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
Galatians 3:16 (New American Standard Bible [emphasis added])

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Galatians 3:16 (King James Version [emphasis added])

  I. Who is a Jew?

Executive Summary: Anyone who self-identifies as being a Jew is a Jew.

The First Words of the New Testament of the Bible

  (I) That genetic descent was of paramount importance to the First Century people among whom God chose to be incarnate in the person of the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, and (II) that the Apostles and other New Testament writers understood this are not in doubt. Jesus Abrahamic (and Davidic) Credentials are the subject of the first verse of the first chapter of the first bood of the New Testament, with detailed elaboration directly following.

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matthew 1:1

  How endogamous?

As unsatisfactory as this answer is, in the middle of the second decade of the XXI century, that may well be the best summary of where things stand. Library shelves, certainly, but perhaps one may even say libraries, are full of monographs and other studies that have been produced over centuries running and that have considered this matter from every imaginable angle. Over very recent decades improvements in genealogical DNA testing have introduced potentials in the field of genetic genealogy, isolation of haploid genotypes (haplotypes), and so forth, that most of us find fascinating. Indeed perhaps we are too captivated by the genealogical aspects of this rapidly developing science, at least we Christians, who believe that all people are the created children of the One and only God, who made us in His image and likeness.

Still, writing these words is unlikely to bring about any diminution in interest, but maybe a few words of caution will be digestible. Firstly, recognize a distinction between the actual scientific results of any investigations, and the way that such are presented in papers you may read and lectures you may audit. Consider the source, and wait for results to be replicated by other laboratories and institutions. Then consider what interests may underlie, what relationships may exist among, those others too.

Very few adherents of Rabbic Judaism — well, none in fact — are going to want to admit of anything that questions their separateness. This situation is itself curious, not a desire for actual separation, of living out a life separately, but a desire to convince others, and themselves, that they are in fact separate, are set apart. In pre-Shoah times the emphasis was quite different, though of course genealogical DNA testing also had not yet come about.

And one might interject a sub-theme, that one is presented here with the spectacle, not of a numerically and militarily dominant Christian power trying to ferret out who is a Jew, with a view toward persecuting or expelling the same. Accepting that levels of assimilation, and thus the difficulty of the task, varied from place to place over the centuries, but still at some basic level, when the Jews were sought out so that they could be expelled from, for example:

  • Brittany in 1240, or
  • England in 1290, or
  • Hungary in 1367, or
  • France in 1394, or
  • Mainz in 1012 or 1474, or
  • Ravenna in 1491, or
  • Spain, Sicily and Sardinia in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, or
  • Krakow in 1495, or
  • Portugal (complicated mix of forced conversions and expulsions) in 1497, or
  • Naples in 1541, or
  • the Papal States (except Rome and Ancona) by Pope Saint Pius V in 1569, or
  • Venice and the Adriatic Islands (not much enforced) in 1571, or

... well, let us stop here for now. This list could be expanded enormously from where things stood centuries before the Nazis and their Nürnberger Gesetze (which, unknown it seems to 99 percent of people in The West, actually deemed as non-Jews huge numbers of people who were Jews by Talmudic law and by self-identification). And of course the argument facially in evidence is a two-edged one, at least two-edged, that is:

Christian powers were, everywhere if not always, despicable and vindictive in their perennial scapegoating of this subtle people, or there were in fact some fundamental and ultimately inescapable characteristics in the Jewish people which made and makes it impossible for them to abide in harmony over the long hall with Christians within Christendom.

But returning to the point at hand, to expell a people there had to be a people to expell, so in these earlier times it was the problem of the expelling power to determine that this or that man was that separate creature, a Jew. Of course, depending on the level of assimilation, this may not have been much of a problem. In our late XX and early XXI century times it is, in significant part, the problem of the Jew to establish to others, and to himself, that he is something, is someone, set apart, that Jews do in fact (still) exist as a discrete and insular people, and indeed as a people with genetic continuity back to the Aaronic priesthood and in fact back to Abraham. When once genetic genealogy, genealogical DNA testing and analysis, enter this purview, take a guess how Jews will relate to the matter. Obviously, the vast majority will embrace findings which support their separateness and continuity in Abrahamic descent.

This, not monotheism and the Tanakh, is the essence and epicenter of Jewish identity.

Minor additions or subtractions will be tolerated. But with any finding which suggest, worse yet purport to prove conclusively, a fundamental discontinuity — allow that means a large Asiatic-Khazar genetic admixture or (conversely?) a large European one, that Jews are in fact just our fellows — expect rejection and obfuscation whereever such are possible.

Interesting times.

The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea; and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all eagerness, examining the scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men. But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there too, stirring up and inciting the crowds. Then the brethren immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there. Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.

For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus which are in Judea; for you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all men by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they may be saved -- so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But God's wrath has come upon them at last!

Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also.

I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut; I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie -- behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and learn that I have loved you. Because you have kept my word of patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial which is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell upon the earth. I am coming soon; hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.

The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. These three were the sons of Noah; and from these the whole earth was peopled. Noah was the first tiller of the soil. He planted a vineyard; and he drank of the wine, and became drunk, and lay uncovered in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it upon both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father's nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, he said, "Cursed be Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers." He also said, "Blessed by the LORD my God be Shem; and let Canaan be his slave." God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his slave."
