  Etchmiadzin Cathedral
Etchmiadzin Cathedral

Well befitting a nation which became the first Christian state in 301 Anno Domini under the spiritual leadership of
Saint Gregory the Illuminator of Armenia (* c. 257, or as early as 240 – c. 331 †)
and the temporal kingship of Տրդատ Գ – Trdat (Tiridates) III the Great (* c. 250 – c. 330 †), the original church
was built on this location in that same year of 301, and strikingly for all Christian Church architecture in the world,
the main structure of the present Cathedral building, though added to in later centuries, dates to 483-4 Anno Domini.

  David of Sassoun
Established in the 8th to 10th centuries as an oral national epic during the Muslim invasions — then Arab, not Turk — Սասնա ծռեր Սասունցի – The Strongmen of Sassoun was set to writing only in 1873 by Bishop Garegin Srvandztiants of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Սասունցի Դավիթ – David of Sassoun is the title of the third of the four cycles of the epic, each corresponding to a generation of national heroes and named after the leading hero of that generation, but in Armenian popular culture David of Sassoun is often used as the title for the entire work. This monumental equestrian statue by Երվանդ Քոչար – Ervand Kocharyan and erected in 1959 has become something of a symbol of Yerevan.

Mount Ararat

Higher in elevation than Mount Blanc of France and Italy (Elevation 4,810 m m / Prominence 4,696 m), though not as high as
Mount Elbris in Russia (Elev. 5,642 m / Prom. 4,741 m), Mount McKinley in Alaska (Elev. 6,194 m / Prom. 6,118 m), or
Aconcagua of Argentina (Elev. 6,961 m / Prom. 6,961 m), would many of us argue with the statement that Mount Ararat
is the most important mountain of European Christendom, except notably for the circumstance that the mountain
resting place of Noah's Ark lies on the Armenian Plateau lies in Asia Minor and within the boundaries of the nation-state
of Muslim Turkey?

  Asia Minor

The red-colored provinces in eastern Asia Minor pictured on the map above are those regions in which the Armenian Christians predominately resided before the Turks burned, raped, shot and starved 1,500,000 of these Christians to death during the Armenian Genocide, conventionally dated to have begun on 24 April 1915, in fact occurring from 1914 through 1918.

A gesture of reconciliation between Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Christians, not yet in the Full Communion of the Orthodox-Catholic Church.

Those familiar with Christian iconography will at once recognize the gesture of Christ in this figure on the façade of this preeminent cathedral of the Oriental Orthodox, that is, Non-Chalcedonian family of Churches, a striking testimony to the fact that the Oriental Orthodox are not, and never were, Monophysite.

1569 Manuscript of writings of Yeghishe on the 5th Century Armenian Persian Wars
In the Matenadaran, a manuscript from 1569 from the writings of Եղիշե – Yeghishe Vardapet (410 – 475) describing the successful revolt of the Christian Armenians in the 5th century against the rule and the Zoroastrian religion of the Sassanid Persians, which revolt culminated in the Ավարայրի ճակատամարտ – Battle of Avarayr on 26 May 451 AD under the command of Saint Vardan Mamikonian. Though a military defeat, in which Saint Vardan was also killed, the battle is counted as a moral victory which paved the way for the Nvarsak Treaty under Vardan's nephew in 484, by which treaty Armenians won the right to freely practice Christianity. And yet this upheaval and the Battle of Avarayr had far reaching consequences of another sort. From this remove it is impossible to gauge the full extent of suchconsequences, but at all events they were of the first moment. The Armenians were unable to attend the Church Council which came to be regarded as the Fourth Ecumenical Council, the Council of Chalcedon, which took place from from 8 October to 1 November of that same year, 451 Anno Domini. Would a delegation from the Armenian Church have made a difference? Might there have been among the Armenian bishops a voice which could have brought the two sides together in the formulation of a definition on Christology, as it is now widely accepted among the best thinkers on the subject that the underlying Christological understanding of those who accepted the Definition of Chalcedon and those who came to be known as Non-Chalcedonian is in fact the same. Or might Κύριλλος Ἀλεξανδρείας – Cyril of Alexandria have pursuaded the Armenians to accept the very Definition of Chalcedon which was his, without further clarification in the definition itself, had those bishops been personnally in attendance?
